Sonia Delaunay Mini Project KS3 Textiles Booklet

For Sept 2021-22 I have a split class at DT whereby I will be seeing Year 7 only once a fortnight on the rotation. ***Adding the PowerPoints as extra as I make them. I have been tasked with running a mini textiles project over 6-8 lessons focusing on the techniques hand embroidery and applique. Inspired by Sonia Delaunay’s use of colour and shape, students are going to design and make a textile greeting card. They will be given a brown kraft A6 card and envelope along with a piece of white cotton/felt. They will then use a range of coloured felt, batik, bondaweb and hand embroidery stitches to make a textile composition to decorate the front of their card. This mini booklet is larger than it needs to be however I can set a few tasks for homework etc. The second page is blank and that is for the marking grid. The booklet includes a range of tasks: Sonia Delaunay Fact File Design Brief Mood Board - Homework Product Analysis Specification and Designing Applique and Hand Embroidery (Extension Task) Evaluation Glossary

A Sonia Delaunay worksheet which I have created as a homework task for my KS3 Year 7 class. This can also be used for a cover lesson for KS3 Art or Textiles to support the use of colour. Students first analyse the two images above and then use blending/rendering to apply colour to the composition using warm/cool colours,

Gargoyle Project Knowledge Organiser

Year 7 are doing a gargoyle project. In their books they create a research page. Due to covid and being in the same classrooms and having no access to computers/printers they struggle with homework task of research etc. To support learners who don’t have access, I have created this knowledge organiser to use in the classroom. I can laminate and use them year upon year to save on resources and also use them during starter activity where I ask questions and they have to source the answers on the knowledge organiser.

Task 2 Hundertwasser Artist Research Page

I have just started a new project with Year 7 and this is task 2 which asks them to further explore the work of Hundertwasser through the use of an artist research page. They have not made one before so this lesson also demonstrates WAGOLL and models excellence. This lesson can be taught across 2-3 lessons. I have set this as a home learning task and created a YouTube video tutorial to accompany the lesson. This lesson includes, do now connect activities, the big picture, learning objectives, WAGOLL, student examplars, and a progress check page. I also go into detail and demonstrate how to analyse a piece of artwork and hoe to annotate their own copies of the artists work.

Attached are the following documents: A powerpoint which includes the big picture, learning objectives, progress check, QR links to useful websites and a QR link to a informative YouTube videos. This is a power-point which could be delivered over a number of lessons and with the current situation is perfect for a non-specialist classroom - all you need is needle/thread. This was one of the first projects I delivered around 6 years ago whist teaching Art Textiles and uploaded to TES a year ago. I can believe it had over 1k downloads! I have taken down and re-jazzed my power-point so it is more contemporary and fits in with my schools 5 principles of excellence. This power-point includes: Do Now Connect Task The Big Picture Learning Objectives Information about Maurizio Anzeri Models excellence and WAGOLL Shows how the project could be developed digitally Mini Artist Analysis Models excellent use of analysis Plenary Connect Activity introduces students so a second artist Hagar Vardimon Any questions please contact me on twitter @CreativeSammie

Art Animal Baseline Test Year 7 Introductory Lesson

This is a great first lesson for Year 7. Once students have been taught about the visual elements students can revisit this task to show progress. This lesson is used to test what know students already have of the formal elements. Without any guidance students complete a baseline test which is a drawing of a parrot. This enables me to gain an understanding of their ability and opens up discussion in lesson 2 about the visual elements. It can also be used to collect their current WAG for data collection. My power-point follows my schools five principles of excellent which includes a do now connect task, the big picture, learning objectives, progress check and an assessment worksheet.

Imaginary Insect Paper Cutting Activity

This lesson(s) has lent itself really well to the current covid restrictions. The lesson can be completed in a non-specialist classroom and students required minimal equipment. KS3 complete an insect project and this one off paper cutting lesson is a perfect addition. You can expand the lesson to talk about negative/positive space. Students moving on from their observational drawings to complete a paper cutting of an imaginary insect. The equipment needed is a black sheet or paper, white/yellow pencil, scissors and a glue stick. My lesson follows the schools 5 principles of excellence so my powerpoint includes a connect activity, the big picture, lesson objectives, WAGOLL, a peer assessment slide and a plenary activity. KS3 Art Cover Lesson: Design a shield for Cardiff Castle

(0)
A great resource if you need a quick cover lesson for Art at KS3. The power-point is only basic but it can be further developed. The aim of the lesson is for students to design a shield to be hung at Cardiff Castle. They have a ‘live’ fake brief whereby their shield needs to represent Welsh Culture and Identity. I created the shield on photoshop. There are x3 versions for the students to select from and I got these printed onto A4 or A3 cartridge. For a cover lesson you may just want to print it on normal paper. At KS3 students already have a welsh culture and identity project so I have attached the visual aids which support students. They also look at a range of illustrators such as Quinton Blake etc. Students use fine liners and colouring pencils to create their illustrations.

Quiz - Terms and Language

(0)
This quiz can be a quick starter, mini or plenary activity for Year 9 or Year 10. It can be done on a scrap piece of paper whereby the students just answer A,B,C or more formally where it is written up and printed for them to complete. Students can then self/peer assess. The quiz is linked to requirement of the National Curriculum KS3 in Art and Design. The quiz is specifically designed at addressing the section which deals with understanding, evaluating and analysing creative artworks using language and terms of art, craft and design. Helping students understand the language of art at KS3 will be very beneficial to GCSE and A level. It will not only enable them to talk confidently about their own work and the techniques and materials they have used, but will also allow them to critically evaluate the work of other artists using appropriate terminology. This ‘vocabulary of art’ will grow and develop over time, as students learn about new and unfamiliar media and techniques, practice applying them to their own work and recognise structures and techniques in the art they encounter in their studies. The wider and more proficient their vocabulary in this area, the better-equipped they will be to annotate sketchbooks, critique their own work and that of others and, ultimately, talk with confidence about their inspirations and opinions of art work.
